Coming from humble beginnings, Sabyasachi Mukherji had no push to pursue his dreams other than his own mad clear love for art and fashion. His father disagreed to his want to take up fashion designing, resulting in Sabyasachi to sell all of his school books to get into NIFT.
This was in the year 1996. In 1991, after graduating with three major awards he started his own brand with just a team of three. In early 2001, he wins the Femina British Council’s most outstanding young Designer of India award, which took him to London for an internship with Georgina Von Etzdorf. He then started his retail stores in India, with a philosophy of “imperfections of the human hand.” The rest of his journey is golden and is known to all regardless to say.
He goes back to the roots of our profound Indian culture and clubs it with the modernity of the day. Maybe that’s where the Bengal tiger of his logo is heading to. His latest collection Kashgaar Bazaar in collaboration with the French Designer Christian Loubotin is derived from different textile influences of The Silk route. - a historic trade route connecting the East and the West.
Kashgaar Bazaar - The Christian Loubotin X Sabyasachi Collection of 2019 has an underlying theme of rustic baroque, with a focus on resort-and-glamping, acid-burnt textiles, mirror-work, phulkari, zardosi, and motifs from Central Asian carpets.
The entire B-town had rendezvoused at the marking of his successful two decades at Hyatt, Mumbai. The red carpet was dazzled by Isha Ambani Piramal, Alia Bhatt, Janhvi Kapoor, Tara Sutaria, Ananya Pandey, Farhan Akhtar, Aditi Rao Hydari, Kalki Koechlin, Natasha Poonawalla and others of the like.
According to insiders, what set a remarkable tone for the was neither the whimsically thoughtful set nor poetry-in-motion of models flitting across the zigzag runway, —it was the unique and vivid soundtrack! ‘Nakka Mukka’ an old popular Tamil track brought the show to a heart throbbing stop.
Sabyasachi Mukherjee also shared his thoughts at the eclectic occasion, “The soul of Sabyasachi lies in craftsmanship – a value system that has remained unchanged since I started the brand 20 years ago. As you grow, it is very easy for values to be replaced by misplaced ambition. But I am proud to say that this value system has survived in our organization. There were times when to cut costs and offer competitive pricing, one could have mechanized hand skills. But we do quite the opposite. Every bit of our merchandise uses more and more craft each year. Sometimes impossible detailing like hand-made buttonholes, desi meena in jewellery and cutting kundan, 24 color screen lining are just some of the many things that go completely unnoticed by a majority of our consumers. But these processes create innumerable jobs year after year. From master weavers to dyers, printers to embroiderers, cutters to tailors, artists to carpenters, metal workers to sculptors, merchandisers to IT professionals, photographers to filmmakers, musicians to writers- the company supports over 27,000 people directly and indirectly. They are based out of West Bengal, Kashmir, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. Our ecosystem of people who have grown and survived with us is our proudest achievement and no amount of recognition or adulation can ever replace that. These are the people who create the world of Sabyasachi. Tirelessly. Without compromise. Every single day.”
